DVDStyler: What You Need to Know

DVDStyler is a DVD authoring program available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It's designed to burn MP4, MKV, and other video files, or even photos to DVD disc. Also, you can save your content as a VIDEO_TS folder, ISO image, or DVDStyler project file. There are 28 title and chapter menus to choose, you can customize them, add subtitles, and configure various advanced settings before burning the project.

Is DVDStyler Safe to Download?

You can download DVDStyler safely. Get it from the official download page. It provides DVDStyler 3.2.1 for Windows and macOS, with download links hosted on DAppCDN. You can also use the SourceForge page to download other versions, including older releases and test versions. The installers are small, with each one under 100 MB.

I installed DVDStyler to check for bundled software, pop-ups, unusual permission requests, and others. No suspicious behaviors. I also scanned the installer with VirusTotal. 0 of 89 security vendors detected it as malicious.

Is DVDStyler Free and Legit to Use?

Yes. DVDStyler is a legitimate open-source tool released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Its source code is public and everyone can use it. And I've burned some DVDs with it without ever being charged a fee or facing any feature limitations.

DVDStyler Test: DVD Creation Speed & Video Quality

I tested DVDStyler on Windows 11 to evaluate its DVD creation speed and video quality. I created DVD Folders instead of burning directly to physical discs. Note: The speed is faster to create a DVD Folder because it skips steps to write content to disc.

Why I tested DVDStyler on Windows?

The Windows version provides the FFmpeg encoder. And I encountered crashes when testing it on macOS, while the Windows version remained stable.

Test environment

I used three video bitrate settings for the test and compared the output. Auto bitrate is the bitrate DVDStyler calculates automatically based on your target disc size and total video length. The goal is to fill the disc while maximizing quality. I also tried a DVD-compatible MPEG-2 file to see how much quicker the process would be.

Test results analysis

• At lower bitrates, the encoder has to spend more time deciding which details to keep and which to discard. So the processing takes longer.
• If your source is already DVD-compliant MPEG-2, DVDStyler won’t re-encode and just does the authoring and packaging. That's why it finished in 40 seconds in my test.
• DVDStyler doesn't fully utilize multi-core processors, leaving system resources idle and limiting encoding efficiency.

Video quality test

Next, I compared the DVD outputs with the original video using the same frame. I cropped and zoomed in on a detail-rich area for a closer look. Open the image below in a new tab to view it in full size.

Test results analysis

• All three outputs are limited to 720×480 for NTSC DVD, so the 1080p video gets downscaled.
• Higher bitrates can help preserve more detail. At 3 Mbps, compression was much more noticeable.

1. Create DVD-video from common video formats

Supported video formats

DVDStyler works with all kinds of video formats and codecs, like MP4, MKV, and MOV, AV1, H.264, and more. It converts them to DVD MPEG2 format automatically, thus don’t worry about what format your video is in.

FAQ: Can DVDStyler burn 1080p?

For input, yes. For output, no. DVDStyler accepts 1080p and 4K videos, but converts them to standard DVD of lower resolution before burning. The higher the input resolution, the more detail may be lost during conversion.

2. Customize DVD project and encoding settings

2.1 Standard TV format settings

DVDStyler allows you to choose between NTSC and PAL (video standards), 4:3 and 16:9 (aspect ratio), MP2 48 kHz and AC3 48 kHz (audio standards) when creating a DVD project.

I tested a 4:3 video in a 16:9 project, and the output was still 4:3 with no stretching. DVDStyler keeps the original aspect ratio instead of distorting the video, that’s good. But it may ignore the aspect ratio you set, which is not good if you just want to change 4:3 to 16:9.

2.2 Bitrate and disc capacity settings

You can adjust the bitrates if needed. As shown in my test above, the video bitrate can affect both burning speed and video quality. If you’re not sure what to use, DVDStyler’s Auto setting can balance video quality and disc space for you. The audio bitrate makes very little difference.

You can also choose the disc size, including DVD-1, DVD-2, DVD-5, DVD-9, or CD. The disc size determines how much video you can fit on the disc.

2.3 Internal and FFmpeg settings (Windows only)

How to fix “no VOB found” in DVDStyler? This is a common question from Windows users. I tested DVDStyler 3.2.1 on Windows 11 with MP4 videos using HEVC, H.264, and AV1, and tried both the internal and ffmpeg encoder. I didn’t get errors.

3. Create custom DVD menus, chapters, and navigation

3.1 Built-in DVD menu templates

DVDStyler offers 20+ DVD menu templates, including Basic, Nature, and Seasons. Just pick one when starting a project, and it will create a basic menu with title and chapter buttons.

Want more options? You can add your own templates by placing a .dvdt project file and its thumbnail in the templates folder in the installation directory. You can also find templates shared by other users on the community forum.

3.2 Custom menu backgrounds and buttons

There are a few backgrounds and buttons built in. You can upload an image, use a color, or even use a video frame as the menu background. Also, you can edit the button text, add extra text, or drag an image from File Explorer. All elements can be resized and moved by dragging easily.

3.3 Create and customize DVD chapters

DVDStyler lets you add chapter markers to help viewers can jump to specific parts. Just double-click the video in the title list at the bottom to open its properties, then enter the time points in "Chapters". You’ll need to add chapters manually. DVDStyler doesn’t import them from the source video. Once they’re set, you can create a separate chapter menu for them.

3.4 Create multi-level DVD menus and advanced navigation

DVDStyler also gives you more control over DVD menus and navigation, including VMGM menus, First Play, title and chapter links, and return actions. You can set these up using pre-commands, post-commands, and cell commands.

FAQ: Can DVDStyler make MP3 play in background of menu?

Yes. You can add MP3, AC3, MP2, or WAV files as background music. Just pick an audio file in the menu properties. It only plays in the menu and won’t change the audio in your video.

4. Add subtitle files to DVD projects

You can burn DVD with multiple subtitle tracks in common formats like SRT and ASS. Subtitles are not turned on by default. You need to turn them on during playback, or add a command like subtitle=0; to a menu button or playback command.

I run into an encoding issue in the test . Some non-English characters may cause an “Error 42 – Illegal byte sequence”. Saving the subtitle file as UTF-8 with BOM can fix it.

5. Create DVD Folders, ISO images, or burn discs

You can choose Disc, Folder, or ISO as the output type. The Preview option will open the generated files in an external player, so you can check the menus before burning. It's not a live preview and need to wait for the temporary files to be created first.

6. Create photo slideshow DVDs

DVDStyler can also burn your photos into a DVD slideshow. It lets you set how long each one stays, add music or text, add the slideshow to the DVD menu as its own title, adjust the quality, and more. DVDStyler can even sort photos by the date they were taken.

Is DVDStyler Easy to Use?

No. DVDStyler comes with many advanced settings that can overwhelm beginners. It's better for complex DVD projects that need custom VMGM menus, navigation scripts, or multiple audio tracks.
