1. Open the document that you would like to encrypt, and click the "Word" menu.

2. Click "Preferences," and then select "Security" from the drop-down menu.

3. Enter a password in the "Password to Open" field, and click "OK".

How to add password to excel files on Mac using Microsoft Excel 2011

If you are using Microsoft Excel 2011, you can follow the steps below to protect your excel document.

1. Open the excel file you want to protect.

2. On the Review tab, under Protection, click Passwords.

3. In the Password to open box, type a password, then click OK.

4. In the Confirm Password dialog box, type the password again, then click OK. Then click “Save” to save your excel document.

How to encrypt excel files on Mac using Microsoft Excel 2008

Problems of using Microsoft Office’s built-in encryption

You can use Microsoft Office’s built-in encryption tool to lock single Office document, but when you have a lot of documents which you have to encrypt, the methods mentioned above are useless, because you have to encrypt each of them, this is very tedious.
