How to Sync Contacts to Gmail for Backup

Contacts plays an important role for people's life and many users want to sync their contacts to Gmail for backup. How to sync contacts to Gmail? In this article, I will show you how to sync your Mac, Android phone , iPad and iPhone contacts to Gmail contacts. The ways also allow for two-way sync.

How to Sync Contacts to Gmail on Mac

As mentioned above, this is a two-way sync. For example, when you add a contact to your Mac contacts, it’s automatically added to Gmail and when you add a contact to Gmail, it’s automatically added to your Mac contacts. So to achieve that, you need to sync Mac Contacts with Gmail.

1.Open Contacts app on your Mac and click Contacts > Preferences.

2.Click the Accounts tab and click “+” button in the bottom left.

3.Select “Google” and click “Continue” to enter your Gmail account and password. Complete the setup process and choose to sync the contact information with Google.

My Mac Contacts synced with Google contacts but it duplicates many contacts. As previously I was having around 2600 contacts in both my Google contacts and Mac Contacts. And they all were same.

How to Sync Contacts to Gmail on iPhone or iPad

If you know how to sync iPhone or iPad contacts to iCloud, then syncing iPhone or iPad contacts to Gmail is pretty easy to you. To sync iOS contacts to Gmail:

1.Open Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars on your iPhone or iPad. And press Add Account....

2.Select Google and enter your full Google Account email address and password to add your Gmail account. Tap Next at the top of your screen.

3.When the new Server field appears, enter m.google.com. Press Next at the top of your screen again.

4.Then you can enable Contacts syncing, alongside Mail, Calendars and Notes. After a while, you can see your iPhone or iPad contacts in Gmail.

By the way, if you have synced your iOS contacts to iCloud, then you can export all your iPhone or iPad contacts in iCloud and download the contacts from the iCloud as vCard file using the browser. At last, import the vCard file into Gmail.

How to Sync Contacts to Gmail on Android Phone

For most Android users, your contacts are automatically synced when you first turn on your phone and sign into your Google Account. So before you sync your phone contacts to Gmail, make sure you add your Google Account to your Android device. Follow below guide to sync contacts to Gmail on Android phone and make sure that you have Gmail installed on your device:

1.Go to Settings on your Android device, then go to “Accounts”.

2.Tap “Google” to select your Gmail account from the e-mail accounts setup.

3.Make sure that you’ve enabled the “Sync Contacts” option. If not, Tap the switch next to Contacts to On.

4.Tap the more button on the top right corner of your screen. Press “Sync now” button and wait until all the phone contacts have been successfully synchronized with your Gmail account.

After the sync process is finished, open Gmail website in your computer’s web browser and click “Gmail” on the upper left to select “Contacts” and then you should see a page where all the contacts from your Android smartphone have been stored in your Gmail.
